How supervised visitation works here
- Colorado law calls custody the allocation of parental responsibilities, and visitation is called parenting time.
- A court can restrict a parent's parenting time only if it finds the parenting time would endanger the child's physical health or significantly impair the child's emotional development.
- When a court restricts parenting time, it must state the specific facts that support the restriction.
- When abuse or domestic violence is documented, the court may order supervised parenting time to protect the child and the other parent.
- A parent who says a child is in imminent danger can ask for an emergency hearing within 14 days, and supervised parenting time until then, using form JDF 1406. The supervisor must be a licensed mental health professional or someone the court appoints.
- In Adams County, parents with minor children in a divorce, legal separation or parental responsibilities case must take a parenting class from the court's provider list and file proof with the court.
