Supervised visitation at the Washoe County District Court
In Washoe County, custody and visitation cases go to the Second Judicial District Court (Family Division (Family Services Division supports it)).
How supervised visitation works here
- In Nevada, courts use the terms custody and visitation.
- Nevada law says that if a court finds by clear and convincing evidence that a parent committed domestic violence, there is a rebuttable presumption that sole or joint physical custody by that parent is not in the child's best interest.
- The court must also make findings that the custody or visitation arrangement it orders adequately protects the child and the victim of domestic violence. The statute does not spell out supervised visitation, so a judge decides case by case.
- The court runs the Family Peace Center for supervised visits and monitored exchanges. It takes court referrals only, for families with active Family Division cases, and it is free but often has a waiting list.
- A Washoe order form directs parents to a parenting class and to the court's mediation program under Washoe District Court Rule 53.
