How supervised visitation works here

In Utah, courts use the terms custody and parent-time.
Under Utah Code 81-9-207 (formerly 30-3-34.5), a court may order supervised parent-time when it is necessary to protect a child and no less restrictive means is reasonably available, if it finds evidence the child would be subject to physical or emotional harm or child abuse.
The statute tells the court to give preference to supervisors suggested by the parties, including relatives. If none is suitable, the court may require the parent to use a professional individual or agency, and the court must consider whether the cost would keep that parent from exercising parent-time.
Both parents in custody cases involving children under 18 must complete a parenting course, generally within 60 days of filing for the petitioner and 30 days of notice for the respondent.
Salt Lake County offers court mediation for parent-time disputes through the 3rd District Court.
